This is the place I can call home

14 January 2021

With a permanent move to Hillsborough signed and sealed, Andre Green has drawn a welcome line in the sand.

The new Wednesday recruit spent no less than a decade and a half at Aston Villa and since leaving Villa Park last summer has yearned for a new place he can call home.

The pacey forward has found exactly that in S6, as he exclusively told swfc.co.uk:

“I have been out of football for around six months but I have been waiting for the right opportunity and it had to be the right opportunity with the right club. Sheffield Wednesday feels perfect for me.

“It’s been a difficult time for me because football is all I’ve known but I wasn’t going to go anywhere where it didn’t feel right and this club just does.

“I’m only 22 but I was at Villa for 15 years and I wanted the next step to be the right one. Villa is a big football club and Sheffield Wednesday is a big football club, I see a lot of parallels between the two.

“Everybody knows Villa and everybody knows Wednesday. People say this club is a sleeping giant and they said the same about Villa in the Championship.

“When I look at the table now it looks upside down. Sheffield Wednesday do not belong down there, we all know what has happened but now we need to get out of trouble and next season challenge around the play-off area.”

Green is chomping at the bit to kick off the next chapter. And that enthusiasm has only been intensified by a combination of his brief time away from the game he loves and the nationwide lockdown.

He explained: “I’m so looking forward to getting started with Wednesday. It’s been a difficult time being out of the game and we’ve all had the lockdown as well. But I have used that to my advantage, to try and be positive because that’s my nature. I know the pressures awaiting me playing for this football club but I am ready and equipped.

“Everything that has happened has made me even hungrier to succeed. I was hungry anyway but what has been happening has just given me even more focus and even more desire. So I look at that period as a blessing in disguise.

“This is the perfect place for me to settle into and make a name for myself. I am at the right age to do something special. I have my targets and I want to accomplish them with Wednesday. This is the new start I wanted at the perfect club, it means the world to me to say to my family ‘here it is, this is it, Wednesday is my new home’. That is what this move means to me.”
