Important international break for Wednesday

22 March 2021

Owls manager Darren Moore is hopeful that the coming international break and fixture-free weekend will give Keiren Westwood and Sam Hutchinson the time they need to recover from injury.

Westwood was named on the team sheet at Oakwell on Saturday but suffered an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Joe Wildsmith.

Hutchinson did not recover in time from his muscular injury sustained against Huddersfield last week. Liam Shaw was also missing from the squad for our trip to Barnsley.

“Westy was in the warm-up making a diving save,” Moore explained after the derby victory. “I'm not quite sure what’s wrong with the injury but we will have to assess him again. I think it was his ribs.

"Hopefully it’s not too serious. He didn't feel comfortable and held his hand up and didn't feel he could go and play. Joe came in, did well and was ready to step in.”

Following the international break, Wednesday head to Watford, who are six points clear of third-placed Swansea.

Moore is hopeful of having more options for the tough run-in and continued:

“It would be nice to get one or two bodies back in there. We’ll have a look at Hutch and we will check on Liam Shaw.

“With Sam, he was close but we felt we just needed to give him another two or three days. We didn’t want to risk him and it was the right decision.

“Hopefully they will be fit and well come the Watford game to be part of selection.”
