U18s report: Owls 2-2 Birmingham

10 May 2021

The Under-18s concluded their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Birmingham at Middlewood Road.

Both sides found the net in each half, with Alex Bonnington and Mackenzie Maltby on target for the Owls.

Jobe Bellingham, younger brother to Jude, and Marcel Oakley got the Blues on the scoresheet, denying Wednesday a fifth successive victory.

It took 34 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock. Rio Shipston, who produced a man of the match performance, played a threaded through-ball to Bonnington, unlocking the City defence. Bonnington used his power and pace to free up room before hammering home.

Wednesday owned the majority of the chances in the first half. Bailey Cadamarteri had a close range effort four minutes before the interval but his shot was cleared off the line.

The visitors were efficient with their limited opportunities and on 44 minutes Bellingham equalised. The midfielder gathered the ball on the edge of the box and his whistling drive was deflected, sending Jack Hall the wrong way.

But five minutes into the second half Wednesday hit back and regained the lead. Leo Davidson drilled a low corner into the area that caused problems in the Blues defence and Maltby was first to react as he smashed into the roof of the net.

With 20 minutes remaining the Owls had a penalty shout as winger Murtadha Al-Jahadhmy went down in the box but the appeals were waved away.

And that proved pivotal as Birmingham countered and Oakley applied a calm finish a yard from goal after Wednesday could not clear their lines.

Both sides went hammer and tongue for the three points in the closing stages. Al-Jahadhmy, who was the catalyst for the Owls going forward, dumbfounded his marker with sublime skill before crossing for Cadamarteri, who planted a header that ricocheted off the post.

That was as near as the contest came to a deciding goal and the young Owls had to be content with a share of the spoils.

Wednesday: Hall, Davidson, Sesay, Kilheeney (Fusire 81), Maltby, Flannery, Trueman (Tapudzai 68), Shipston, Bonnington (Holland 60), Al-Jahadmhy, Cadamarteri
