The Owls Under-18s booked their place in the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Burton Albion.
A Ben Radcliffe own goal and a brace from Leojo Davidson earned Wednesday a deserved victory at the Pirelli Stadium, though Andy Holdsworth’s side finished the game with ten men following the late dismissal of Rio Shipston.
Wednesday were lively from the off and went ahead in fortuitous circumstances in the fifth minute when Filimon Asfha’s cross was turned into the net by Brewers defender Radcliffe.
Davidson struck his first of the night from the penalty spot ten minutes before the break.
Shipston was fouled in the box and dangerman Davidson was cool from the spot, slotting straight down the middle to double our advantage.
The hosts rallied after the break and Wednesday survived a big penalty shout 18 minutes from time when Jakub Niemczyk was bundled over in the box but the decision went in favour of the visitors and play continued with Wednesday two goals to the good.
The Owls were reduced to ten men eight minutes from time when Shipston saw a straight red for a strong challenge in the middle of the park on Joseph Nyahwema that was deemed reckless.
But Wednesday re-grouped and put the game well and truly to bed on 86 minutes when Davidson fired into the bottom corner first time from Joey Phuthi’s assist.
