18s return to the top after derby victory

22 November 2021

The Owls Under-18s emerged victorious from Saturday’s top of the table clash at Barnsley.

A 2-0 win over the Reds saw Wednesday leapfrog their South Yorkshire rivals back to the Under-18 Professional Development League summit.

Goals from Leojo Davidson and Joey Phuthi sealed the win as the Owls claimed back top spot, now two points clear of Barnsley and with two games in hand.

With half chances for both sides in the early exchanges, it was Wednesday who grew into the game and broke the deadlock in the 21st minute courtesy of a trademark Davidson solo goal.

Having won the ball back just inside the opposition half, Davidson advanced upfield before cutting on to his right foot and curled the ball inside the far post from the edge of the box.

There was little between the sides in the evenly matched derby contest as the Reds threw everything at Wednesday in search of an equaliser.

But in throwing players forward, the hosts became vulnerable to the counter making it a tense end to the clash with only one goal in the game.

And deep into second half stoppage time, the Owls wrapped up the points and a return to top spot.

Goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill’s clearance landed at the feet of Filimon Asfha, who slipped the ball through for Bailey Cadamarteri to fire a low shot on target which squirmed through the keeper’s grasp before Phuthi smashed home from a yard out.

Wednesday’s Under-18s face Coventry on Tuesday morning at the Alan Higgs Centre, 11.30am kick-off.

Owls: Hall, Fusire, Ashman, Flannery, Sesay, Kilheeney, Al-Jahadmy (Wassell 80), Maltby, Holland (Asfha 65), Cadamarteri, Davidson (Phuthi 85)
