The 33-year-old’s work ethic and quality on the ball was evident again at the weekend and his match-winner in front of the Kop a just reward.

The manager said: “I’m really pleased for Lee Gregory, he works tirelessly in every game.

“What you want from your number nine is goals and I’m really pleased with that side of his game as well.

“The way he leads the line for us has been exceptional. He puts in a real shift every game and got his reward. He’s a quality player for us and a key player.

“We’ve been working on that kind of goal the last couple of days in training so it’s nice to see the win come from that.

“I was really pleased with his physical output, he covered every blade of grass across that frontline and it was a top all-round performance.”
