Darren Moore: Post-Shrewsbury talking points

18 September 2021

Darren Moore spoke to the media following Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury at Hillsborough and here are the key talking points.

ON THE GAME

It was a game of two halves really – first half we were absolutely blistering at times, second half we just kind of went away from the gameplan and that’s something I will have to analyse over the weekend. There were big moments in the game – if Saido scores his second chance, if Baz scores the penalty, and then we had a clear goal disallowed in the second half.

I thought it was onside straight away because Mide has come from behind his marker and then I got the message from the analysts that it’s onside. You can always tell with the reaction of the defenders and I think they knew it was onside. It’s a shame, it’s frustrating but these things happen in football. Sometimes these decisions go for you, sometimes they go against you and it’s gone against us today.

Should we have won the game? Yes. We were dominant and we did we didn’t get the big decision. So it’s frustrating but we have a point and it stopped that run of consecutive defeats and we build on that and move on.

ON SAIDO BERAHINO

You want your attacking players on the scoresheet and Saido can score goals, he’s done it all his career. That was a typical Saido goal, a poacher’s goal and I thought he was unlucky with the second one, he’s got good contact on it but it’s just gone the wrong side of the post. He cramped up towards the end so we have to keep chipping away at him and get volume into his game.

ON THE PENALTY

With the momentum we had, if the penalty goes in, I think they might have crumbled because we were so dominant. I said to the players when you have adversity you come together and you move on. Is Barry still my penalty taker? 100%. He lives and breathes this football club and there’s no one more disappointed than him right now.  I feel for him, I really do, because it was a sublime pass to Mide for the second goal and it was incorrectly ruled offside.

ON MOVING FORWARD

In terms of getting this place jumping again we have to build on the momentum we showed in the first half. Our home form is good, we are unbeaten here in the league and now we have to build on what we have. We are on a journey but there will be times when there will be bumps in the road. The only way to get better is through hard work and that’s what we will do. I saw a lot of positives today but obviously they are overshadowed by the result. It’s turned into a frustrating afternoon when it promised so much.

ON SUBSTITUTIONS

I didn’t want to take the three players off the pitch and they didn’t want to come off but they all had little niggles, nothing serious, but enough to come off. Saido cramped up a little and we will manage his situation. The more minutes he gets into his legs the better and better he will be. With Dennis and Mide, again it was just minor and muscular and hopefully the three of them will be fine for Monday. With George Byers, he got a knock in training that ruled him out today but again nothing serious. With Patto and Jaden, I made those decisions because we have a strong squad and there are only so many shirts.
