Doing the right things

Owls Under-23 coach Lee Bullen will take his young side to face Sheffield FC this evening in a midweek friendly at Tuffnells Home of Football Stadium.

Without a fixture in the Professional Development League this week, our 23s will face the Northern Premier League outfit tonight, 7.45pm kick-off.

Supporters are welcome to attend the game and tickets are priced £4 adults and £2 concessions.

Bullen told swfc.co.uk: “We had a free week in our fixtures schedule and it’s good to get local opposition for a game. Traditionally we always try to play the likes of Sheffield FC, Hallam FC and Stocksbridge Park Steels if we can.

“Tonight will also be an opportunity to look at two to three trialists.”

With several of the club’s youngsters out on loan, as mentioned above, the Owls will be bolstered by trialists in the squad.

The likes of Ryan Galvin, Liam Waldock and Charles Hagan are away from the club gaining valuable senior experience.

It’s a huge part of the challenge facing the staff at 23s level, with the long term aim of sending players out on loan to aid development, and the short term consequence affecting results in the PDL2.

But Bullen is delighted to see the Wednesday youngsters getting the game time they need in competitive football.

He explained: “Six to seven of our current Under-23s squad were at Under-18 level last season and it’s a big jump in physicality and quality so yes, it has been tough results-wise.

“But the club are doing things right, getting the older ones out on loan and in doing so, exposing the younger ones to a lot of game time at 23s – something which they may not have got if we were keeping players in the 23s squad.”
