Off the mark in style!

29 September 2021

Callum Paterson’s first goal of the campaign was worth the wait on Tuesday night at the DW Stadium.

Right on the hour mark in our clash with Wigan, Paterson’s eye-catching volley hit the back of the net in front of the 3,500 plus contingent of Wednesdayites behind the goal.

It was a superb moment for the visitors in a lively Lancashire encounter and proved key in leading us to a return to winning ways.

The Owls held a first half advantage courtesy of an own goal following miscommunication in the Wigan backline before Paterson doubled the lead after the break.

He told swfc.co.uk after the game: “It’s been a tough old slog so far this season, so it was nice for something to break our way and we put the second in to go on and win the game.

“There was a bit of luck to the second goal too! A left foot volley, into the ground and over the goalie so yes, a bit of luck but I am better when I don’t think about things too much and hit it as hard as I can.

“Thankfully it went in! It’s my first goal of the season, it’s been a slow start from me and I haven’t been selected the past few games so it was nice to be back in the team and show everyone what I can do.”

He added: “It was a good result, obviously we were disappointed to concede a goal late on in the game and then have to deal with that sort of bombardment but it’s good to get back on track with three points.

“We can now look forward to the next game. The fans have been unbelievable and have packed everything out every single game, it’s a cliché but they are our 12th man and we appreciate the support. We can’t wait to get going again.”
