Under-23s frustrated at Charlton

17 September 2021

The Owls Under-23s had every right to leave the capital frustrated on Friday as we went down 2-0 against Charlton.

On another day, the scoreline might have been reversed at Sparrows Lane as Wednesday took the game to the Addicks and went on to boss the first half.

But after the hosts took the lead just past the hour, the young Owls couldn’t muster a way through and returned to Sheffield empty-handed.

Chances were at a premium in a relatively one-sided opening period and it was that key area in the final third that proved the Owls’ undoing as Charlton created and scored two opportunities after the break.

On 62 minutes, the hosts burst upfield on the break and a low centre found its way to Jacob Roddy, whose low shot was deflected in by the unfortunate Josh Dawodu, wrong-footing Josh Render in goal.

As Wednesday pressed for an equaliser, gaps appeared at the back that the Londoners exploited as Hady Ghandour tapped in at the far post with eight minutes remaining to send the Owls home pointless.

Wednesday: Render, Dawodu, Aguas, Hughes, Agbontohoma, Thompson (Glover 77), Zottos, Trueman (Al-Jahadmy 85), Bonnington, Farmer, Bernal (Davidson 77)
