U18 Report: Owls 1-3 Swansea

11 April 2022

The Owls Under-18s fell to a 3-1 defeat against Swansea on Saturday morning at Middlewood Road.

Having made a blistering start with a wonder strike from Danny Wassell, the Owls were denied a return to winning ways as the visitors came from behind to leave S6 with three points.

Wassell gave the Owls the lead with an impressive strike from range but Swansea responded with two goals in as many first half minutes with Corey Hurford and Iwan Morgan on target.

Pierce Charles saved from the penalty spot to deny Kyrell Wilson after the break but the Swansea substitute did get his goal with 20 minutes left on the clock to seal the win.

In a first half dominated by Wednesday, the undoubted highlight came in the 18th minute from midfielder Wassell who received a bouncing ball and volleyed into the top corner from range leaving Swans goalkeeper Tyler Evans with no chance.

It was fantastic build-up play on the left with Fuad Sesay and Murtadha Al-Jahadhmy combining before Wassell took charge and hit a stunning effort to break the deadlock.

Swansea responded well to their early setback and turned the game on its head just past the half hour mark with two goals in two minutes from Hurford and Morgan.

It was a cruel blow for the Owls, who had dominated the ball but the Swans were ruthless in front of goal and went in at the break with a lead.

Swansea had a golden chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot ten minutes after the restart as Cian Flannery was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Wilson stepped up from 12 yards but Charles made the save low to his right to keep Wednesday in the fight.

But Swans youngster Wilson was not to be denied and gave his side a two-goal cushion on 70 minutes to seal the points against a Wednesday side who had huffed and puffed to get back into the game without success.

The Owls are next in action later this month away at Cardiff on Saturday 23 April.
