10 August 2022

Wednesday v Sunderland
Wednesday 10 August
Carabao Cup

The Owls host Sunderland in the first round of the Carabao Cup this evening live on Sky Sports.

Both Wednesday and the Black Cats have made solid starts to their league campaigns with four points apiece after two games.

A 3-3 draw on the opening day of the season for the Owls at home to Portsmouth was followed up by a 1-0 win away at MK Dons.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have made a good start back to life in the Championship, gaining a point on the first day at home to Coventry before defeating Bristol City 3-2 on the road.

Wednesday: As the Owls switch their focus to the cup after posting a positive start in League One, manager Darren Moore may opt to freshen the side up for the Sunderland tie.

Lee Gregory is back available for selection after his one-game ban, while Michael Smith remains on the sidelines.

Akin Famewo will miss out after picking up an injury at MK Dons.

Sunderland: The Black Cats are also expected to rest several players.

Following Sunderland’s thrilling 3-2 win over Bristol City on Saturday, manager Alex Neil said: “Definitely an opportunity for guys to show what they can do. Freshen things up a bit.

We’ve got so many games that it’s important that we need to get minutes into the players legs but like I say, it’s an opportunity for some guys to put their claim forward.”
