Report: Derby 0-0 Wednesday

3 December 2022

These two League One heavyweights have battled out some memorable head-to-heads down the years – alas this was not one as Derby and Wednesday posted a goalless draw.

The point for the Owls, though, is another step in the right direction, particularly following the favourable results on Friday night.

They had to grind this one out on a bitter Pride Park afternoon, where talking points were few.

Indeed, a low key first half passed almost entirely without incident. David Stockdale had his hands warmed by a David McGoldrick long ranger but that aside, Derby failed to trouble the Owls’ backline.

The reverse was true at the other end in fairness, where ex-Wednesday keeper Joe Wildsmith remained a virtual spectator.

Play was scrappy, with no real fluency from either side through the thirds.

The second half needed an uplift to warm the hands of freezing fans as temperatures plummeted in the Midlands.

And there was more zip to the game after the restart, with the Rams pushing for ascendancy in front of a vocal home crowd.

Darren Moore changed his front two on the hour in a bid to make the ball stick in the final third and the pendulum did nudge more towards the visitors.

On 64 minutes, the Owls came close to a breakthrough. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru showed skill and determination to swivel his marker in the box and shoot but Wildsmith was equal to the low drive.

The closing stages were played out in similar fashion to most of the game, with neither side able to take any consistent authority, leading to a stalemate that was probably the right result.

Wednesday: Stockdale, Palmer, Iorfa, McGuinness, James, Vaulks, Dele-Bashiru, Bannan, Johnson, Mighten (Paterson 59), Smith (Wilks 59)
