Sean Fusire pens professional Owls deal

9 December 2022

Young midfielder Sean Fusire has signed his first professional contract with the Owls.

The 17-year-old has been in the Wednesday academy set-up since the age of nine and now pens professional terms at Hillsborough.

Fusire has been a key player for the Owls’ Under-18s and Under-21s over the past 18 months and was named in the first team squad that faced Leicester Under-21s in the Papa Johns Trophy earlier this campaign.

He also scored the winner in our Under-18s' 1-0 victory over Derby in round two of the FA Youth Cup.

Fusire said: “I’m buzzing, it’s a big thing for me and my family and it’s a nice feeling.

“I’ve always been a Sheffield boy, I played a couple of years at Sunday League and I came to trial for the academy when I was nine and I’ve been here all the way through to get to where I’m at now.

“I’ve put everything into the club and it’s nice to see the club putting everything into me by giving me a professional contract.”

The teenager plays predominantly in central midfield for Wednesday, but has a versatile edge to his game that has seen him operate at full back, something he believes is just another string to his bow.

He added: “I’ve always said I don’t have a set position, which I see as a bonus, I don’t define myself as one thing. It’s nice to be able to do a lot of different things.

“All the guys in the academy have been great with me, I’ve known Steven Haslam since I joined and Thommo has taken me under his wing and involved me in a lot of the Under-21 squads too so I’m really grateful to them all.

“We’re lucky because we have a manager and first team staff that like to bring young players forward. We’ve been involved in training, some of us have been involved in games and it’s nice to see the first team are looking good this season too.”

Academy Manager Haslam added: “We’re really pleased, Sean has been with us for a long time and he’s shown good development in the last 18 months since he became a scholar.

“He was fast tracked into the Under-21s quite early and he’s shown he’s got further development to come.

“Boys come into the system at various points in the programme and Sean is another one who joined us really early.

“He’s featured regularly for the Under-21s and he’s experienced a first team environment now as well so there’s more to come from Sean.”
