That winning feeling

27 December 2022

Marvin Johnson was pleased to see the ‘winning feeling’ return to the Owls’ dressing room after our 2-1 Boxing Day victory over Fleetwood Town.

The winger hit a sublime volley to complete the Wednesday comeback, after George Byers had cancelled out Shaun Rooney’s opener, in a typically feisty, festive clash.

The 32-year-old said: “We knew it wasn’t pretty. Obviously, Boxing Day is always a scrap as everyone wants the points after Christmas! That was our main focus, just getting the three points.

“We drew the last three games, but for all of us it’s felt like we’ve lost them. We don’t want to draw, we want to win as many as we can, so to get that winning feeling back will kick us on into the New Year.

“Everyone expects us to play well every single game because of the quality we have, but when we’re not playing so well and we can still get the three points, that’s the winning formula to get you where you need to be.”

Owls boss Darren Moore said the game needed a moment of magic, and Johnson was delighted to deliver with a sweet volley.

He added: “It may come down to that sometimes if teams make it difficult to break them down, sometimes you need that quality or that spark from somewhere and luckily I was the one to do that today.

“I’ve had eight or nine of those in the past three games! So, I’ve been dying for one to go in, so I think I was due one!”
