Darren Moore: Post-Wigan talking points

8 February 2022

The Owls edged past Wigan at Hillsborough on Tuesday night and here are some talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference:

ON THE BALANCE OF THE GAME

Wigan are a very good team and I was really pleased for the players tonight because that was a composed and professional performance. Wigan have the second-best defensive record in the league but we managed to penetrate it and we deserved it overall. There were chances at both ends but this is a big win for us.

ON THE PENALTY

I haven’t see it back yet but the referee said penalty so a penalty it is. I was tracking Massimo’s run and just at the point of the contact the linesman just blocked my line of sight so I couldn’t really see clearly in all honesty. What I did see was Baz scoring the penalty and that’s what you want from your captain. I thought he was excellent again tonight, industrious and creative and he gets the winning goal.

ON FOUR WINS IN A ROW

Of course it’s the kind of form that you want at this time, in a hectic month of February we have come through well so far. For me, I always want more, I always want to improve, to get better. It’s credit to the players for the run we are on, they have gone out there, taken the instructions on board and delivered. But we will never get carried away, we take each game in isolation and on Sunday we have another big game to look forward to, a big derby game against a team that is top of the table for a reason.

ON THE CLEAN SHEETS

I’ve said it before, clean sheets are the foundation for what we are aiming to achieve. All the players take the credit. Yes, the defenders will take the plaudits but we attack together and defend together. It stems from hard work on the training ground for a relentless month of February with eight games. We play, we recover, we play, we recover…that’s the schedule but we prepared for the challenge, we are ready for the challenge and we will meet it head-on.
