We did what we had to do

1 February 2022

Jamie Smith said the Owls did what they had to do in beating Morecambe at Hillsborough on Tuesday.

Goals from George Byers and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing put the Shrimps to the sword and gave absent manager Darren Moore a welcome tonic.

Moore returned a positive test for COVID-19 and missed the game as a result.

Smith said: “We’ve been in regular contact with the gaffer and he’s doing well, he’s feeing okay. He’s got a bit of a sore throat but overall he’s feeling fine.

“He’s delighted with the win as we all are. We had to work for those points, do what we had to do against a very hard-working team in Morecambe.

“It was important to build on the win on Saturday, we need more back-to-back wins. This is a big month for us and we have got February off to a good start on the back of the three points against Ipswich.”

The victory did not come without cost, though, as three Wednesday players succumbed to injury.

Harlee Dean, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Josh Windass each hobbled out of the action and Smith explained:

“It’s too early to say at the moment with the three lads who came off. We will let the dust settle with them, assess them and take things from there.

“We have players giving their all, putting bodies on the line, and with that will come bumps and bruises and injuries. Hopefully these are not serious but we will assess them as soon as we can.”
