Academy march on in the Clarets Cup

14 January 2022

The Owls academy are enjoying an excellent campaign on all fronts including the Clarets Cup, where Wednesday picked up another victory earlier this week.

The Wednesday youngsters defeated Mansfield 2-0 at Thorncliffe on Tuesday to go top of Group A.

A cracking first half strike from Leojo Davidson and a Danny Wassell penalty after the break saw the Owls book their place in the next stage of the competition with a game to spare.

The Clarets Cup is a competition founded by Burnley for Under-17 players.

The competition begins with a group stage format, each consisting of five teams with the top two progressing to the knockouts. The venue for the final is Burnley’s Turf Moor.

So far, the Owls have drawn 1-1 with Blackburn and picked up wins over Salford (5-1) and now Mansfield.

Our final group stage game is against Bradford, who are currently in second spot, on Tuesday 25 January.

Next-up for the academy boys is the FA Youth Cup fourth round tie with Preston at Hillsborough.

Supporters are welcome to attend the S6 cup clash on Tuesday 18 January and ticket prices are £3 adults, £1 concessions and no charge for Season Ticket holders.

Our Clarets Cup side v Mansfield: Charles, Phuthi, Maltby (Chapman 46), Dawes, Johnson, Thornton, Davidson (Lane 60), Wassell, Holland, Maciag, Yogane
