Enjoy the game, enjoy the occasion

18 January 2022

The Owls Under-18s go head to head with Preston in the FA Youth Cup tonight, facing the Lilywhites in the fourth round at Hillsborough.

Andy Holdsworth’s side have posted three victories on the road to reach round four and the 18s manager told that with the planning and preparation complete, it’s now over to the boys to extend that pedigree in S6.

He said: "The gameplan is set, the players have the key messages in and out of possession, the tactical and technical side is done and now we have to implement this successfully on the pitch in a different environment.

“It will be fantastic for the boys to play at Hillsborough in front of their friends and families and Wednesdayites. There will be pressure but that’s a good thing.

“The academy have had a good first half of the season in the league, the FA Youth Cup, the Clarets Cup and with some of the Under-16s stepping up to the 18s.

“Tonight is a different test. Myself and the coaching staff have set high standards and the players know what we expect.

“We want them to have a real good go, this is the last year for the second years, the last opportunity to play in the FA Youth Cup, so give it your all, enjoy the game and enjoy the occasion.

“Hopefully we get the job done and get to the next round against a tough team in Blackburn.”

Under-18s skipper Caelan Kilheeney spoke of his pride at leading the Owls into battle in the revered youth cup competition:

“We’ve had three away games so far so to play at home is something we are all looking forward to.

“It’s a dream come true for me to be leading out the team at Hillsborough. We started the New Year with a 2-1 win at Peterborough and we want to succeed in the cup.

“We’ve come a long way as a team and if we do what we did at Southampton in the last round we will be fine.”

The cup-tie kicks off at 7:00pm and supporters are welcome to attend and back the boys.

Prices at Hillsborough are £3, £1 concessions, with no charge for Season Ticket holders.
