Darren Moore: Cambridge, confidence and a man in form

12 March 2022

The Owls turned in the performance of the season so far on Saturday, hitting Cambridge for six at Hillsborough. Here is a selection of talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.

ON THE GAME
Obviously I’m pleased, pleased with the result and pleased with the performance. We could even have had more goals with the number of chances we created but you have to be happy with 6-0. We started the game well, we set the tempo of the game and didn’t give Cambridge the chance to settle. When we attack like that we are a match for anyone. The focus was right and the concentration levels were spot-on. I was pleased to see Bailey make that save at the end because it showed the importance of the concentration levels from front to back.

ON SAIDO BERAHINO
He is capable of that, Saido, he has a lot in his locker and we’ve had to be patient with him and he’s had to be patient with himself. He’s been so keen to succeed and today was the reward for Saido for all the extra hours he’s put in to get himself into the best possible shape. The football in Belgium is very different to the football in England so, although he had that base level of fitness, match fitness over here is completely different. He took his goals well today and also got an assist so a wonderful afternoon for Saido, he is certainly a man in form.

ON DISCIPLINE AND MOMENTUM
We know what we needed to do after last week at Lincoln, when we weren’t quite ourselves. We had to bring discipline and momentum to the table today and we did that. We set the tone, the pace of the game, and when a team does that it can be difficult to defend against. It was important to me that we kept the momentum going and we spoke about that at half time. It would be very easy to finish at 4-0, bank the points and move on. But I wanted to see that ruthlessness and to get another two goals in the second half was really pleasing. As I say, it could’ve been more with the volume of chances we created.

ON CONFIDENCE IN THE CAMP
We’ve always been confident, even when some of the results have not gone our way. We know the quality of the group of players we have and what we are capable of. To beat any team in this division 6-0 is an achievement so the boys can take a lot of confidence from that performance. We play Accrington next on Tuesday, they have had a good result themselves today, so it’s important we put a line through our game and turn our attention very quickly to Accrington.
