Darren Moore: Post-Cheltenham talking points

26 March 2022

The Owls ran out comfortable 4-1 winners against Cheltenham to keep up the promotion challenge and here are some talking points from Darren Moore’s post-match press conference.

The thing that pleased me early on was how we responded to Cheltenham getting their goal. It was a deflected goal and these things happen, it’s how you respond that counts. We brushed that off really and got straight back on it and equalised. Credit to the players because that’s exactly what you want to see. After that it was pretty much one way and I always felt if the chances come our way then so will the goals because we have the players who can put the ball in the back of the net.

They came here to have a good go and credit to them for that. Cheltenham get the ball down, they like to play football and they got their noses in front. I think we had too much firepower in the end but I have a lot of time and respect for Michael for what he has achieved and what he is trying to do with Cheltenham. They were promoted from League Two last season but they have taken League One in their stride, they are looking up in the table and I am sure they will look back at a very satisfying season.

There were some big moments in the game when it was 2-1. Bailey has made an incredible save then Harlee has made an incredible block and these are game changing moments. Cheltenham had that spell when they looked dangerous, they also hit the bar, but big players react and I think we saw that today. Those moments can be the foundations for victory.

It’s not just the players who responded to the early goal against us, the crowd did as well. I didn’t hear anything negative at all, in fact if anything the atmosphere became louder and more positive straight after we restarted the game. That helped us get the equaliser so credit to the fans as well. That was a collective effort today. I think there is a lot of atmosphere and belief around the place and it shows. This time last season I am certain we lose that game after going down early on. The tide has turned now and we look and feel different.

We saw a terrific all-round performance from Jack today. He took his goal so well that I can’t believe that’s his first for the club! He was excellent today, on the ball, his crossing, and the icing on the cake was his goal. Since I have been in management I have always encouraged my full backs to get forward and try and get on the scoresheet. Marvin has scored this season, he’s been creating a lot and now Jack has scored as well, and he’s been creating a lot as well.
