U18 report: Owls 0-0 Coventry

21 March 2022

The Owls and Coventry played out a close-fought goalless draw at Middlewood Road on Saturday.

With both sides well in the race for the league title and a play-off spot, a win for either side in the weekend clash would have been significant.

Wednesday went into the fixture on the back of three successive wins, while the Sky Blues were looking to build on back-to-back victories over Peterborough and Hull.

The form guide and league table suggested a tight contest and so it proved as a point apiece was a fair outcome in the S6 sunshine.

Though Coventry were fortunate to be on level terms at the break as Under-16 winger Isaac Holland carved out two big chances for Wednesday.

On the first occasion, Holland had the beating of the Coventry full back before cutting back for Leojo Davidson, whose effort rattled the upright.

And Holland’s threat continued as the half progressed and another dangerous centre picked out Bailey Cadamarteri, who fired just wide from a first time strike.

Straight from the restart Wednesday countered and Cadamarteri was denied the opening goal by a smart save from Bell.

But with ten minutes left on the clock, it was Wednesday goalkeeper Jack Hall who was forced into action and made a huge save when City striker Samuel Rodber seemed favourite to score from close range.

Hall’s quick reflexes kept the clean sheet intact and the Owls managed to muster one last chance in stoppage time but Filimon Asfha dragged his shot wide from the edge of the box.

Wednesday host Barnsley on Saturday at Middlewood Road.

SWFC: Hall, Fusire, Ashman, Flannery, Wassell (Phuthi 81), Asfha, Sesay, Kilheeney, Holland (Al-Jahadhmy 69), Davidson, Cadamarteri
