A completely different dynamic

7 November 2022

A tense penalty shootout victory over Burton at Hillsborough earned the Owls Under-18s another home tie in round two.

Derby will visit S6 later this month, with the date to be confirmed in due course.

On Saturday, the hosts overcame the Brewers 5-4, with Pierce Charles saving the one spot-kick missed by Oakley Hazell.

Manager Andy Holdsworth said: “As soon as we went to penalties we had hands that went straight up and that’s what you want to see.

“You’ve got to have the confidence and the lads who stepped up have great technical ability.”

The Rams await in round two and Holdsworth says that more experience of playing at Hillsborough can only be a positive in the development of the young Owls.

He added: “Some of these lads have been in the system since the age of nine and have grown up dreaming of playing at Hillsborough.

“Playing at Hillsborough is always a challenge. There was a lot of cramping up on Saturday, there’s a lot of nervous energy to consider.

“The lads played 120 minutes instead of the regular 90 in front of fans and families with much more intensity.

“Every time they shape for a shot, the crowd noise is a completely different dynamic inside a stadium, it’s a real positive for their development and character.”
