An all-action exhibition match for Rio

15 November 2022

The football community came together on Sunday afternoon for a special cause as a charity match for Rio Spurr took place at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium.

Rio, son of former Owls academy graduate Tommy Spurr, was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer earlier this year.

Tommy and his family are now focused on raising as much money as they can to ensure little Rio receives the best treatment possible.

The latest fund-raiser was a football-themed afternoon at Tommy’s former club Doncaster, whom he joined after leaving Wednesday in the summer of 2011.

A mixture of celebrities and Tommy’s old team mates took part in an exhibition game that entertained the crowd at the Eco-Power.

Some questionable goalkeeping, some less than assured defending and a lack of, shall we say, match fitness did not get in the way of an action-packed contest that finished 6-2 to the Rovers legends!

Spurr dusted off his boots and played the full game in his usual left back berth and was of course on the winning side that lifted the trophy at full time with Rio proudly watching on!

That was a Wednesday flavour attached too with ex-Owls skipper Rob Jones a rock at the back, Carlton Palmer in midfield and Deon Burton in attack!

At full time, Tommy thanked all those in attendance as did Rio, and we would like to echo those words and thank all Wednesdayites who went down on the day and donated online.

There is still time to donate to Rio’s fund via this link here.
