Dogged and determined to win

19 November 2022

The Owls strengthened our promotion credentials with a resolute win and performance against Shrewsbury and Darren Moore hailed the determination of his players to grind out the points.

Mark McGuinness opened his Wednesday account with the only goal of a game the hosts dominated.

The Shrews came out of a rearguard action in the closing stages but Wednesday held on for a vital victory.

Moore told swfc.co.uk: “Credit to the players today because Shrewsbury played a low block and made it difficult for us.

“But we plugged away and got the goal from the set piece and I’m pleased for Macca because he was outstanding today.

“Credit too goes to Simon Ireland, he’s been working on the set pieces and it’s always rewarding to see one of them come off.

“What pleased me the most was the doggedness of the team, they threw their bodies at everything when they had to when Shrewsbury came out.

“There were blocks, headers, tackles and a determination to keep the ball out of the net. That’s a sign of the progress we have made as a team.

“Maybe we could have scored more but the most important thing is the win.”

Moore said his medical team will assess Josh Windass during the week after the forward was forced off late in the second half.

He explained: “We think it could be a groin injury but we don’t know if it’s a knock or a pull at this moment in time.

“We will assess Josh in the week and see where he’s at but hopefully he will be okay.”
