Hard work paying off for Wilks

3 November 2022

Mallik Wilks made only his second start for the Owls on Saturday since his summer switch from Hull and manager Darren Moore is thrilled by the forward’s progress getting to this stage.

Behind the scenes at Middlewood Road, the work has been hard for Wilks.

The forward missed a large chunk of last season and then joined the Owls in late August.

But Wilks has chipped away at the workload and the benefits were there for all to see at the weekend as the ex-Hull man played 87 minutes and scored a wonderful goal in the second half against Burton.

“We were delighted for Mallik because he has had to really work hard,” the gaffer said.

“He didn’t play much football last season and whilst the games have been going on, a lot of people have been asking where he has been.

“He’s been doing work. He’s almost been doing his own pre-season and then getting bit part minutes.

“He picked up a little thigh injury, a strain which kept him out for 12 days so he has had to do continuous work but on Saturday I thought it was the right game to bring him in.

“I thought he took his goal really, really well, was totally in control of it, knew what he wanted to do and it was a perfect execution.

“We’re really pleased for him to get those minutes because it will do him the world of good and for him to score, at home, it was absolutely fantastic.

“He can feel really pleased with his work.”
