Darren Moore left the south coast pleased with his team’s performance after our penalty shootout defeat to Premier League Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round.

Wednesday led through Josh Windass but James Ward-Prowse levelled and the home side eventually came out on top in the shootout after Alex McCarthy saved Dominic Iorfa’s sudden death spot kick.

Moore said: “I thought we were outstanding first half. I thought our tactical play in terms of overloading the midfield would expose them and that happened with Baz, Tyreeq and Fis, then Josh does what he does.

“I came to watch a game here against Newcastle on Sunday and I just thought we could create problems with our three in midfield and it worked out that way.

“We scored a very good goal and had some chances after that, their keeper made some good saves to stop us going two nil up. I’m obviously disappointed, because we came here to reach the last 16, but it wasn’t to be.”
