U18s through on penalties

5 November 2022

The Owls progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup after beating Burton 5-4 on penalties.

The two teams could not be separated in normal and extra time, leaving Sean Fusire to fire home the decisive spot-kick.

Earlier, Dylan Scott gave the Midlanders the lead with what proved their only attack of real purpose throughout the 120 minutes.

Bailey Cadamarteri levelled and from that juncture, Wednesday assumed control but could not put the ball in the net.

Despite attempts into double figures, Burton stood firm to take the tie to penalties – but Pierce Charles saved from Oakley Hazell and the hosts deservedly went through.

After slowly but surely taking a grip on the game, the Owls fell behind against the run of play on 13 minutes.

Charles did well to parry a fierce drive from Joseph Nyahwema but could do little about the rebound, which Scott dispatched from close range.

It was harsh on Wednesday, who had to regroup and forge a way back into the tie, which so very nearly came from their next attack.

Rio Shipston lined up a free kick from distance, the execution was right on point, only for the ball to crash against the far post.

The Owls kept up the pressure and were rewarded on 33 minutes. Joey Phuthi raced to the byline, pulled back for Cadamarteri and the finish into the bottom corner was emphatic.

Wednesday’s tails were up and Jarvis Thornton burst through on goal just before the break but Burton keeper Kamil Dudek kept the score level with a smart low save.

Dudek came to the rescue again on the hour, this time diverting a fierce drive from Sean Fusire inside the penalty area.

The Brewers’ custodian was rooted to his line moments later when Wednesday almost went into the lead.

Phuti crossed from the right to find the advancing Cadamarteri, whose improvised volley whistled narrowly past the far post.

Time and again the Owls poured forward - Dudek thwarted Carlos Rodrigues on the angle and Josh Chapman powered a header over the bar.

Burton struggled to get the ball from their own half, with the only thing lacking from the home camp that cutting edge.

The tie went into extra time and the one-way traffic only increased.

Cadamarteri glanced wide, Moses went close with a clever chip before Dudek blocked Jake Bradford at his near post.

Burton could barely make a move forward as Wednesday had complete control but with no further breakthrough, penalties would decide the winner.

Shipston, Cian Flannery, Cadamarteri, Devlan Moses and Fusire all converted and the Owls were safely through to round two.

Wednesday: Charles, Rodrigues (Bradford 71), Flannery, Tapudzai, Chapman, Maltby, Fusire, Shipston, Thornton (Fernandes 100), Phuthi (Moses 98), Cadamarteri
