Moore: 'We did what we had to do'

15 October 2022

Lee Gregory’s brace guided Wednesday to the cusp of the top two as Cambridge were overcome 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium.

Darren Moore said his side ‘did what they had to do’ and although the manager said there was room for improvement, the points were the most important part of the day.

He told “It’s another three points and another clean sheet. We did what we had to do. When I look at the game, we could have used the ball better but we’ve come here for the win and we go home with the win.

“I’m pleased for Lee Gregory because his form has been fine but we know strikers are judged on goals, and that’s what he got today.

“We had a chat in midweek and I told him to be patient, the goals will come.”

At the other end of the field, the Cambridge shutout was Wednesday’s eighth from 14 league games and a breach never looked in doubt on Saturday.

Moore said: “We were dogged and determined, very resolute. As the second half went on, you could hear the players encouraging each other, wanting that clean sheet.

“I thought the defenders were outstanding today. Cambridge are top of the table in terms of crosses coming into the box and we nullified a lot of that.

“The clean sheet is another positive. Cambridge had a lot of the ball but I don’t recall David Stockdale having too many saves to make.

“So it’s three more points, it’s another win, we draw a line through it now and move on to the cup game on Tuesday.”
