Owls support Rainbow Laces 2022

26 October 2022

This evening’s game between the Owls and Bristol Rovers is our designated fixture to support Rainbow Laces 2022.

Stonewall's Rainbow Laces Campaign is an annual event in support of the LGBTQ+ community, aimed at increasing diversity in sports across the world.

The Owls’ Community Programme has been busy at work delivering LGBTQ+ workshops to primary schools across Sheffield, as well as giving out Rainbow Laces to participants across their sessions to help raise awareness for the cause.

Paul Hebda, Inclusion Officer for the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, said: "Inclusion is a big part of what we do here at SWFCCP, we're focused on building a safer community and delivering sessions where everyone feels welcome."

Brett Pitcher, Premier League Primary Stars Coordinator, said: "Nearly half of all LGBT+ pupils still face bullying for being who they are – and to change this stigma, it is important to deliver workshops throughout the curriculum, that encourage children to respect others.

“Here at the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, we believe that children deserve to learn about a world which reflects the one in which they are growing up. Many children will have LGBTQ+ parents, friends or family members and this should be reflected in the school curriculum.

“This week we have run a workshop, in partnership with the Premier League, at Pipworth Primary school, delivering an LGBTQ+ session with KS2 Students. The children had the opportunity to develop their knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community and have a discussion about this.”
