Report: Cambridge 0-2 Wednesday

15 October 2022

Lee Gregory returned to his sharpshooting best and steered Wednesday to victory at Cambridge.

Gregory had one strike to his name this season, prompting Darren Moore to insist pre-match that the goals would come to match the impressive form.

And Gregory duly obliged, netting either side of half time as the Owls continue to chip away at the League One table.

Moore’s men are now within touching distance of the top two having turned in a thoroughly professional performance at the Abbey Stadium.

It was an ideal start as Wednesday hit the front on six minutes.

Tyreeq Bakinson played Gregory through with a delicious defence-splitting pass and the veteran forward advanced to cleverly dink over Dimitar Mitov.

That gave the Owls a solid foundation they were in no mood to relinquish.

The visitors controlled much of the first half, limiting the U’s to hopeful punts from range and only one real opening.

Sam Smith did well down the right flank to wriggle free of Ben Heneghan and cut inside to shoot but David Stockdale swiftly stopped the danger.

Bakinson fashioned a second super through-ball at the other end, this time for Michael Smith, who forced Mitov into a save at his near post.

The Cambridge keeper came out on top again moments later, keeping out Smith’s close range header from a hanging Josh Windass cross.

The Owls’ backline was solid and well-drilled, which presented problems for the hosts going forward as they sought a way back into the game.

To their credit, the U’s enjoyed much of the possession after the break, albeit without troubling Stockdale.

Danger loomed too as Wednesday threatened on the counter, evidenced on the hour when Mitov needed two attempts to keep out a fierce Marvin Johnson shot.

The Cambridge shot-stopper then did well to deny Gregory a second from a fizzing Windass feed as the Owls looked to put the points to bed.

And they did exactly that with 13 minutes to go. Liam Palmer darted down the right, looked up to find Gregory, and his cute volley wrong-footed Mitov, who could only watch the ball loop into the top corner.

Wednesday: Stockdale, Palmer, Ihiekwe, Heneghan, Vaulks (Dele-Bashiru 90), Johnson, Bannan, Bakinson (Byers 69), Windass, Gregory, Smith (McGuinness 69)
