A powerful thing in football

1 April 2023

The Owls return to Hillsborough this afternoon after three games on the road and captain Barry Bannan has penned his regular column for our matchday programme.

It has been a hectic period for the Owls’ fan favourite, who became a father for the second time this week following the arrival of baby Wilf!

Following the birth, the skipper made it to Cheltenham in time to play the full 90 minutes and was full of praise for the reception the team received at full time from Wednesdayites after battling back from 2-0 down.

Bannan’s pinpoint cross for Aden Flint dragged Wednesday back into the game and in-form Lee Gregory then rescued a point three minutes from time.

Speaking to ‘Wednesday’ he said: “It’s good to be back home today, we know teams coming to Hillsborough have it tough and we have a great record here this season.

“We need to use that today but I thought the fans on Wednesday night were unbelievable at the end of the game.

“It would have been easy to go the other way because we didn’t get the three points that everybody wanted but they can see the boys gave their all.

“What the fans gave us after the final whistle shows a togetherness. We have to thank them for that and I can tell you now, when we get that kind of reaction after the game, it gives everyone a lift for the next one.

“They could have been down or could have booed us off but they flipped it. When everyone is pushing for the same goal, it’s a powerful thing in football.”
