Narrow down our Goal of the Season contenders!

13 April 2023

With the end of the 2022/23 season coming into focus, we’re asking supporters to help narrow down our contenders for the club’s Goal of the Season award!

Wednesday are amongst the leading scorers in League One and the goals have come from all departments over the course of the campaign.

At Hillsborough, the Owls lead the way - alongside promotion rivals Ipswich - with 46 home goals scored.

On the road, Darren Moore’s side have hit the back of the net 25 times – making it 71 in total from 41 games so far.

But which goal is your standout for the season?

Six of the goals below will be in contention for the award later this month and it’s down to you which make the cut!

1 & 2. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru v Portsmouth

A six-goal thriller on the opening day of the season saw Dele-Bashiru strike twice.

Both goals were strong contenders to make the shortlist – the first a powerful hit from range after cutting inside with the score level at 1-1.

Then at 3-2 down, a corner fell to FDB on the edge of the box and the midfielder fired into the roof of the net with a venomous strike.

3. Dennis Adeniran v Sunderland

The first goal of the season for Adeniran came in the Carabao Cup against Sunderland – a stunning effort from distance on the left foot into the top corner!

7. Will Vaulks v Port Vale

A tough contest at Vale Park was settled by a Vaulks worldie! There seemed little danger for the hosts in the moment but all that changed when Vaulks came from nowhere to fire into the top corner from distance!

8. Barry Bannan v Cheltenham

A cracking strike from the captain! Leading 1-0 inside the final 10 minutes, Bannan settled any nerves after controlling a pass infield from Lee Gregory before rifling home into the Kop net from almost 30 yards!

9. Mallik Wilks v Burton

A first league goal from Wilks and superbly taken too! The forward picked out the top corner to make it 3-0 against the Brewers. The Owls went on to claim maximum points 4-2.

10. Josh Windass v Morecambe

This time in the Emirates FA Cup, Windass broke the deadlock at Hillsborough with an excellent strike from range into the far corner.

11. Marvin Johnson v Fleetwood

An important three points on the road as the Owls came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1. Johnson’s winning strike was a wonderful volley from outside the box after the hosts could only partially clear Bannan’s corner.

12. Michael Smith v Port Vale

Wednesday ran out 2-0 winners hosting Vale and it was Smith who grabbed both goals in S6.

His second has made this shortlist – a unstoppable strike into the top corner following a swift counter from Wednesday.

13. Josh Windass v Newcastle

A lovely team move on a big night under the lights at Hillsborough in the cup.

Wednesday rocked Premier League high-flyers Newcastle and it was Windass with both goals.

The opener began with wonderful skill from George Byers and as Wednesday worked the ball well in the box, Windass applied the finishing touch from close range.

14. Will Vaulks v Wycombe

A typical Vaulks wonder-strike on this occasion won the points for the Owls at Adams Park!

The midfielder saw space open up and was not afraid to go for goal from long range early in the contest.

It proved a good decision as the ball flew into the back of the net and Wednesday left Buckinghamshire with three points.
