The Owls are delighted to welcome our Armed Forces to Hillsborough on Saturday and the group have a special message for supporters:
It gives us great pleasure to attend the fixture between Sheffield Wednesday and Exeter City at Hillsborough on Saturday.
The Yorkshire region is a hugely important partner for the Armed Forces and SWFC have a proud history of support.
We continue to do a great deal of work with the club and find their support to the Armed Forces Community immensely valuable.
This work ensures that via our engagement and partnership, we can promote a strong relationship between the Army, the nation and Yorkshire, ensuring that we can recruit, train, live and resettle well in Yorkshire.
Only last month the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme and the British Army hosted a free community grassroots football competition at the new 4G facility at Jubilee Sports and Social Club.
We offer a variety of sporting opportunities throughout a soldier’s career. The British Army has produced some extremely talented footballers, as well as others across a variety of sports, that have even gone on to represent their countries on the professional stage.
Recently we have seen the SWFC Community Programme launch a programme for Armed Forces Veterans providing support including football, Talk Club and a health project responding to the challenges faced by Armed Forces communities. This was funded through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.
Today, the match is supported by members from local units including 101st Regiment Royal Artillery ‘The Geordie and West Riding Gunners’, 64 Signal Squadron and the ‘Soldiers of Swing’ and Recruiting Group Outreach (and avid Sheffield Wednesday supporter LCpl Scott Crane) plus many other serving personnel and veterans within the crowd.
At half time we will see the re-signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by Sheffield Wednesday’s Chief Operating Officer Liam Dooley and Major Karen Thomson from the 4th Light Brigade Combat Team and Headquarters North East.
On behalf of the British Army, we salute you. Thank you for your support, in the past, today and for the future. Good luck.
