Stick together and keep moving forward

29 April 2023

Darren Moore was pleased with the assurance his side showed following our 3-0 win over Shrewsbury at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Michael Smith netted his maiden Owls hat-trick to put the club on 93 League One points.

Moore said: “We played with assurance and confidence and from start to finish we didn’t allow Shrewsbury any real momentum in the game, because we know they can be dangerous here.

“I thought the pitch played well today and with the rain coming down it added a bit of grease to it which helped us in terms of moving the ball around.”

Despite victory in Shropshire, results elsewhere ended hopes of automatic promotion for Wednesday, so a play-off campaign will follow our league finale against Derby.

Moore insisted the team’s focus now shifts to a big opportunity and he praised his players for their achievements so far this season.

The Owls gaffer added: “What we have now is a wonderful opportunity and that’s what we’ve got to be looking at.

“I said it on Friday, I won’t look back because it takes energy, and unspent energy isn’t what we need.

“The points we’ve got this season and the records we have broken are there to be enjoyed, we’ve had to achieve those things to put us in the position where we are now, and we still have an opportunity.

“Everyone should take credit for what the club has done this season. If you look at the last two years, we’ve shown great progression, and that’s down to everyone involved.

“We pushed on this season, the points tally that we have, we know over the course of any other season where we would be. But we know we’re not in any other season, we’re here in 2023 and we continue to look forward.

“Of course, I’m disappointed not to get automatic, but we have another opportunity.”

Wednesdayites were in fine voice in Shrewsbury and Moore explained how vital they will be in the final month of the campaign.

He added: “The fans were tremendous. I said to the boys, ‘you’ve seen the reaction and they have complete belief and trust, they are with you all the way.’

“We’ve got a full house to look forward to next week in S6 against good opposition and we focus all our attention onto that game.

“We had another full awayday travel today and we have a full house next week. So, it goes to show where their mindset is at.

“The biggest message I have for everybody is stick together and keep moving forward.”
