The result was the important thing

22 April 2023

On a day when points outweighed performance, Darren Moore was pleased with the character his players showed in coming back from a goal behind to beat Exeter.

Callum Paterson scored the winner at Hillsborough after Lee Gregory cancelled out Josh Key’s opener to keep the Owls’ promotion hopes alive.

Moore told swfc.co.uk: “The result was the most important thing today and we got that.

“It was all about the win and the boys showed character, togetherness and unity to come back and win the game.

“We had words at half time, all of us as a group, because it was a bit of a nothing performance in that first half. The goal that Exeter scored straight after half time sparked us into life really and when we got the first goal I had no doubt we would get the second.

“That win gives us 90 points for the season so it’s credit to everyone really. Ninety points after 44 games is a great tally and while it’s mathematically possible we will continue to go after automatic promotion.”

The gaffer was pleased to see Michael Ihiekwe return as a second half substitute and also issued an update on the fitness of Josh Windass:

“I’m delighted for Icky because you can see the quality he brings to the team. He said to me after the game that it meant the world to be back out there so he will get some good rest tonight and hopefully he will be fine.

“With Josh, he will be back out on the grass next week. He will have a lot of tests to come through successfully before we consider him but it will be a big positive to see him back out there with the group.”
