U18s: Owls v Blades

9 April 2023

The Owls Under-18s were narrowly edged out 2-1 in the Middlewood Road derby clash with Sheffield United on Saturday morning.

Though for Wednesday, the biggest concern came in the second half with Josh Chapman and Tafadzwa Tapudzai both picking up significant injuries that delayed play at the Owls training ground by almost 30 minutes.

The stricken Wednesday duo received medical attention on field just moments apart after picking up injuries in separate incidents and were then taken by ambulance.

Wednesday led at half time thanks to a goal from captain Mackenzie Maltby just before the interval.

The Blades turned the game around in the second half with Sam Aston equalising on 52 minutes before Sean Fusire inadvertently turned into his own net from a low ball into the box just before the hour.

Injuries to Chapman and Tapudzai then saw the game delayed by over 25 minutes.

When play did resume, George Dickinson saw his late penalty saved by Jack Hall deep into added time but it mattered not for the visitors who went on to claim the points.

Academy manager Steven Haslam said: “The most important thing from today is that we wish Josh and Taf all the very best.

“They are both cracking lads and have been key players for the team this season.

“Both boys were in a lot of pain and they’ll get the best treatment, we’ll wait for their scan results and then we’ll know more from there.”

He continued: “We’ve had two very competitive derby games this week and the lads have battled well in both and there have been positives.

“But at this moment, our thoughts are with the two lads and getting them on the road to recovery as soon as possible.”

We wish Josh and Tafadzwa all the best and will provide an update in due course.
