We got the performance right

18 April 2023

Darren Moore had praise for all aspects of his side’s performance this evening at the Memorial Stadium as Wednesday posted a vital victory to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

The gaffer was delighted with his side in and out of possession and praised the team for their response to Saturday’s defeat at Burton.

Wednesday dusted themselves down and made a return to winning ways against Bristol Rovers with first half goals from Barry Bannan and Akin Famewo sealing the points.

“A good three points with a solid and resolute display tonight,” the gaffer told swfc.co.uk

“We knew we had to come here and be strong, they don’t have a bad home record.

“We had to be resolute but we knew with our off-the-ball approach, we could capitalise on some of the chances and we did.

“I thought Baz’ goal was an excellent finish and it sent us on our way and gave us a platform - I felt we grew in confidence once he scored his goal.

“Barring a lapse of concentration at the start of the second half, and despite all their huffing and puffing, we were good with our off-the-ball work and knew as long as we kept it up we would get the three points.

“It was a detailed first half performance and collectively it was the right response we needed.

“It goes to show when you get the performance right, you give yourself every chance of getting the points. We got the performance tonight, it was the response we wanted from Saturday.

“In the last four days you can see exactly what you can achieve if you do things right and what happens if you don’t.

“Once they got within 20-30 yards of our goal we did our jobs which was really important.

“The work we have done over the last 24 hours has been essential, it’s been good quality work, a couple of classroom sessions as well and that saw us right tonight.

“We’ll move on to Saturday and now it’s about the players recovering after putting a shift in.”

Famewo, who struck his first goal for the club tonight, went down with injury in the second half and was replaced by Tyreeq Bakinson after 51 minutes.

The gaffer says Famewo will be assessed over the next 24 hours.

He continued: “We hope it’s just tightness and fatigue, obviously he has played a lot of football in a short space of time.

“We’ll assess him over the next 24 hours but hopefully, it’s just that. Full credit to him, he got on the end of it and scored his first goal and you saw how much it meant to him. It was a special moment for him.”
