Match Pack - Owls v Southampton

4 August 2023

Wednesday v Southampton
Friday 4 August

Football is back! New Owls boss Xisco leads his side into battle against Southampton as our Championship campaign gets underway in S6.

The contest is live on Sky Sports, with both teams playing in fresh environments for 2023/24.

Wednesday, of course, won promotion from League One via the play-offs while Saints dropped from the Premier League into the second tier.

Tonight’s game will be preceded by a minute’s applause to mark the passing of iconic Owls figures Trevor Francis and Chris Bart-Williams, both of whom sadly died on the same day of 24 July.

The matchday programme this evening is also dedicated to Trevor and Chris and our thoughts remain with their families and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

Wednesday: With a raft of new signings coming into Hillsborough, Xisco has options around the pitch.

Bambo Diaby, though, will sit out tonight’s curtain-raiser as he serves the final game of a suspension carried over from last season at previous club Preston.

Southampton: Our visitors also have a new man at the helm in Russell Martin, who joined from Swansea over the summer.

Martin, speaking in his pre-match media conference, said he will be bringing a strong side to S6, with forward Sekou Mara the only doubt.

This fixture is Category D and prices start from £36 on the Kop (£31 for Owls Members). Tickets can be purchased online HERE until kick-off or from the Ticket Office.

As always, we advise supporters to arrive at the stadium as early as possible to avoid unnecessary queues.

Please note there are no cash turnstiles in operation from this season moving forward.

Stadium clocks, scoreboards or giant screen timers in the EFL will now be left running until the completion of each half, which includes any additional time at the end of either the first or second half.

Previously, these would stop at 45 or 90 minutes, however in line with the most recent IFAB guidance, including match officials’ new approach to timekeeping, this will now change for the new season.

Due to recent consistent rainfall, rail replacement works currently underway between Shalesmoor and Hillsborough have been delayed up to and including Tuesday 8 August.

This means that trams are not running from and to Shalesmoor but replacement buses are in operation.

The EFL, Premier League, FA, FSA, PGMOL, LMA and PFA have come together to announce a series of measures to address behaviour across the game.

This includes new policies, procedures, and regulations to come into force from the start of the 2023/24 season to address unacceptable conduct on the pitch, on the sidelines and in the stands.

The new measures build on the work launched last season to combat dangerous and illegal fan behaviour, supported by the ‘Love Football. Protect the Game’ football-wide campaign.

We are also reinforcing the importance of all supporters staying within EFL Ground Regulations, which can be found HERE
