Shootout victory sends Wednesday through

8 August 2023

Debutant goalkeeper Devis Vasquez proved the hero as Wednesday advanced to the second round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Stockport, winning 4-1 on penalties.

The Colombian kept out spot-kicks from Paddy Madden and Louie Barrie to see the Owls through amid late drama at Hillsborough.

An early Madden goal seemed to have guided the Hatters to the winning post as the skipper delved into the top drawer with a stunning early goal.

That was until the 97th minute, though, when substitute Tyreeq Bakinson claimed the equaliser that sent the tie to penalties.

And Vasquez basked in the spotlight at his new home to put Wednesday in the hat for tomorrow’s second round draw.

Xisco handed debuts to four new recruits at the back – Vasquez, Pol Valentin, Di’Shon Bernard and Bambo Diaby.

The quartet were untroubled in an incident-free opening that suddenly gave way to a wonderful strike 16 minutes in.

Akil Wright delivered an inviting ball into the box, where Madden pivoted and hit an unstoppable volley right into the top corner.

Only stout defending from Ethan Pye kept the Hatters’ lead intact. Anthony Musaba left keeper Ben Hinchliffe on the floor and seemed certain to score but was denied by Pye’s brave block at close quarters.

The remainder of the first half was a balanced affair, with Wednesday seeing more of the ball but Hinchliffe was rarely called upon.

The contest needed a spark after the break and Ashley Fletcher almost provided it with a rasping drive across Hinchliffe but just past the post.

Diaby had a snapshot deflected wide following a mini-scramble and the Owls certainly had more about them in the second period.

Both sides utilised the bench on the hour - Wednesday made two changes and Stockport three.

The pattern of the tie stayed the same as Stockport dropped deeper and deeper, relying on the counter in any forward thrust.

Xisco threw on three more substitutes in the closing stages but it was mainstay Barry Bannan who twice went close, sending wicked shots from distance inches over the top.

Bakinson then forced the save of the game from Hinchcliffe, who sprang across his goal to divert the midfielder’s header.

But Wednesday persisted and saved the best right to the last. With a little over a minute to go, Bannan swung in a looping, angled cross that Stockport struggled to clear and Bakinson was on hand to stab home.

So to penalties we went – and as the Owls converted all four, Vasquez twice denied the visitors to send an impressive following from Stockport back over the Pennines with nothing to show from a spirited S6 display.

Wednesday: Vasquez, Valentin (Paterson 59), Diaby (Iorfa 80), Bernard, James, Vaulks (Bakinson 80), Bannan, Delgado (Fusire 80), Musaba, Gregory, Fletcher (Windass 59)
