A big occasion for the boys

8 December 2023

As the Under-18s prepare for their FA Youth Cup third round tie at Hillsborough this weekend, Andy Sharp has outlined what he wants to see from the players.

The Wednesday youngsters play host to Hemel Hempstead in the cup, with kick-off scheduled for midday.

Explaining the build-up and work in the week, the Professional Development Phase manager said:

“First and foremost we want intensity and energy. Since Danny has come in at first team level, we are trying to filter the same messages down to the 21s and 18s.

“We have been working a lot around high intensity principles but it’s obviously a big occasion for them and nerves will naturally play a part.

“The early part of the game will set the tone and that will be an important factor. We are looking for them to settle quite quickly and bring our principles over into the performance.

“It’s a different one to prepare for, having the game at the stadium plays a big part and for some of them it will be the first time playing here.

“The second years had experience of it last year and we had a good run in the Youth Cup and you’d like to think they will have learned from that experience.

“They will have friends and family coming to watch at the main stadium and for them, it’s a dream come true after being at the club for quite a few years.

“We will keep the preparation work as normal as we can, at the end of the day it is just another match.”

Hemel Hempstead have had a superb Youth Cup campaign so far and have won five cup-ties, including the qualifying rounds, to make it to this stage.

“They are coming from a level where we don’t get as much access to footage,” Sharp continued.

“We obviously like to look at teams and try to pick out key things to help the players.

“We’ve seen their previous game against Exeter so we have been a little limited in terms of that but at the end of the day, it’s about us, playing at Hillsborough and seeing the principles of Sheffield Wednesday.

“We’ve seen it with Bailey (Cadamarteri) recently and he’s now moving on to the next chapter of his development.

“He’s come through the same process as what these boys are going through now. It gives the lads a picture that it is achievable.

“It will be interesting to see how the players respond to the challenge.”
