Paterson and Bambo in contention

22 December 2023

Bambo Diaby and Callum Paterson were both withdrawn early last weekend through injury in the Owls’ victory over QPR.

During our pre-Cardiff press conference, manager Danny Röhl issued a positive update on the duo.

He said: “Callum is back in the training, he is fine and I was very happy when I got the result from the scans.

“It is good, especially at this time of year, to have as many players available as you can.

“When you have a lot of games you have to look to how you can rotate fresh legs and how you can manage the game.

“He is a guy who can run, can fight, who can press very well and I am very happy with him.

“Bambo is also back in the training which is also a fantastic signal. He is always a fighter for us.”

Elsewhere, Josh Windass and Michael Smith are closing in on their returns but it will be a case of wait and see regarding their availability for Saturday.

“With Josh and Michael we will look day to day,” Danny explained. “With these injuries, an extra 24-48 hours can be very helpful.

“We will think and I will decide for this on Saturday but looking forward, we do not have too much time for recovery in the next two weeks. Then it’s about is he ready is he not ready.

“Both are back out on the pitch but we have to look how this will work for the weekend.”

Unfortunately for John Buckley, the midfielder is set for a stint out of action.

The Blackburn loanee injured his shoulder shortly after coming on from the bench against QPR and has undergone an operation this week.

The manager continued: “John will be out for the next weeks, he got his operation today (Thursday) and it looks not good.

“I called him on Wednesday in the evening and wished him all the best for the operation and we will do everything to make sure he has a quick recovery.

“I saw immediately after the foul and his shoulder – I had the same issue when I was younger. We will do everything to help him get back as soon as he can.”
