Momo Diaby returns as 21s draw with Blues

20 December 2023

While the Owls squad and staff were out spreading festive cheer in the community on Tuesday afternoon, our Under-21s were at Middlewood Road for their final game of 2023 - a top of the table clash with Birmingham.

Both sides led in the game but in the end the points were shared in a 2-2 draw.

Momo Diaby, back from an injury sustained on his debut in August, played the full 90 minutes at the Owls’ training base.

With both sides going strong in the Professional Development League, it was leaders Birmingham who cracked first.

Blues captain Josh Home was crowded out in midfield, lost possession and punished seconds later as Favour Onukwuli’s powerful hit off the upright was nodded home by Luke Cook.

Goals either side of the break from Junior Dixon and Tommy Fogarty turned the game on its head as the visitors sought to extend their lead at the top of the table.

But on 63 minutes Wednesday levelled as Onukwuli’s looping header came back off the crossbar and Gui Siqueira was first to the loose ball and finished from close range.

The result leaves the Owls in third spot, nine points off Birmingham at the summit but Andy Holdsworth’s side have two games in hand.

SWFC: Charles, Siqueira, Flannery, Adetoro, Maltby, Buchan (Moses 80), Shipston (c) (Glover 46), M. Diaby, Phuthi, Onukwuli, Cook (Johnson 71)
