We must create a new momentum

26 December 2023

Owls manager Danny Röhl says his side lacked a ruthless and clinical edge in front of goal on Boxing Day as his side went down 2-0 at Coventry.

The Sky Blues controlled large periods of the first half but had just the one goal to show for their dominance at the break.

The Owls were better after the resumption but could not turn their chances into goals, leaving Danny to rue a lack of quality at key moments in the final third.

He said post-match: “We wanted to attack and create some moments but we were not clean enough to have good transitions and I think in the second half we changed the shape a little bit.

“This helped us have better control in the game, good pressing moments and winning the ball high.

“We created a big opportunity to come back into the game and equalise but missed the chance.

“Then I think it was the first shot in the second half from the opponent and they scored.

“It shows the quality in the two boxes.

“When you look back at the first goal we conceded, we were not able to defend this and if you always do the same mistakes then it will be hard to take something in this league.

“When you look to a 2-0 from the opponent and their shooting, you can see the quality from them. We have three times in the one moment to finish the action with a goal but are not able to do this.

“Maybe not calm enough, we know this so then it’s about creating more and more. To take something in this league you have to be clinical and take opportunities when they are there.

“I tried everything with substitutes, almost everybody got an opportunity, it was nearly all-in with what I have at the moment. Hopefully we can have some players come back soon.”

Unfortunately for the Owls, Callum Paterson sustained an injury moments prior to the opening goal and looks set to miss our trip to Preston on Friday.

Bambo Diaby was sent off after the full time whistle for an off-the-ball incident with Liam Kitching and will also miss out through suspension.

“We will miss two more players now," the manager continued. "Callum is injured and will be out the next games I think.

“Then we got the red card too so, yes, it is hard.

“It is normal to have emotions in the game, the game was played fairly so it’s hard to see the red cards at the end and now we have the player out.

“But, ok, we have to go forward and do it again and create a new momentum.

“It’s not a straight forward process, you won’t just have ups, there will be ups and downs.

“It is disappointing today, we didn’t take anything and we have to accept this but now it is about recovery and preparing for the next game.”
