Mentality stays the same

16 February 2023

Barry Bannan says the mentality in the changing room will never change irrespective of the opposition.

In a vital recent period for the club, Wednesday took four points from fixtures against promotion rivals Plymouth and Ipswich, followed by Tuesday’s win over Morecambe.

It was a healthy return for Darren Moore’s side who are six points clear in the automatic promotion spots with two games in hand over now third-placed Bolton.

From those top of the table encounters to facing the relegation-threatened Shrimps, the skipper says our focus, concentration and mentality remains the same, as does the objective – to pick up maximum points.

Bannan said: “Every game offers something different but whether we are playing a promotion rival or teams down at the bottom, our mentality never changes.

“We are a massive club and it’s our responsibility to go and win games, the pressure to do that is always on our shoulders as it should be.

“Being a Sheffield Wednesday player, you have to go out there and win, it’s what’s expected of you and the boys welcome that pressure.”

The skipper set the ball rolling inside the first minute with an expert finish into the bottom corner from George Byers’ cutback.

“I was really pleased to get back on the scoresheet and to feel really good out there on the pitch,” the captain added. “I want to be out there playing games and help get this club back into the Championship.”
