An early goal from Liam Palmer retained Wednesday’s place at the summit as Charlton were beaten 1-0 in the capital.
Palmer’s strike not only sealed three vital points but ensured the Owls broke another club record along the way - 20 straight league games unbeaten for the first time in history.
And Darren Moore’s men were good value for the win, taking charge from the first whistle and forcing the Addicks on the back foot.
And we were a lick of paint away from the perfect start as Barry Bannan’s clever curler crashed against the woodwork.
But there was no way out for Charlton eight minutes in. Jaden Brown found Palmer in acres of space inside the box and the defender’s calm finish belied his regular position on the park.
Incredibly, the same duo combined in near identical fashion midway through the first half but this time Ashley Maynard-Brewer was grateful to gather.
The hosts remained vulnerable and in truth were doubtless relieved to head towards half time only one goal down.
Wednesday carved two more chances before the whistle - first Josh Windass burst clear only to be halted at the last by Lucas Ness, then Maynard-Brewer dashed off his line to thwart Dominic Iorfa on the angle.
It was more of the same in the early throes of the second period as the Owls dominated – but the Addicks could have squared it with their first opening of the game on 52 minutes.
Miles Leaburn had time and space 12 yards out to pick his spot but sliced wide of the post with the goal gaping.
That sparked the Valley crowd into life and Charlton edged back into the contest in terms of possession.
But the attacking impetus stayed with Wednesday and George Byers went close with a glancing header that landed on the roof of the net.
Back came the Londoners and Cameron Dawson was tested for the first time when Corey Blackett-Taylor took aim from the edge of the area.
Moments later, Dawson kept out Chuks Aneke from range and Iorfa did well to take care of the rebound with Leaburn steaming in.
The Owls rode the mini-storm and headed back upfield, with Michael Smith shooting just wide from 20 yards with Maynard-Brewer rooted to his line.
A second and crucial goal never arrived but it mattered not as Wednesday managed the game out with an air of confidence that matched the team’s place at the head of the pack.
Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, Flint, Famewo, Brown (Adeniran 63), Vaulks, Bannan, Byers, Windass (Dele-Bashiru 90), Smith (Gregory 77)
