'First thing I thought about was the fans'

5 January 2023

Darren Moore is anticipating an electric S6 atmosphere when Premier League high-flyers Newcastle visit Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Owls meet the Magpies in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup (6:00pm) for an appetising cup-tie live on BBC1.

And Moore says the game is an exciting prospect for both sets of supporters.

In an extract from his programme notes, Moore writes: “I said it from the start, as soon as the third round draw was made, the first thing I thought about was the fans, this is a great fixture for both clubs and both sets of supporters.

“Two big, historical clubs in the pyramid of football with huge fan bases, and even when you speak to anyone outside of football, they know straight away the names of Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United.

“The two clubs now go head-to-head in the FA Cup and what a mouthwatering tie this is. This is a wonderful spectacle for both clubs, we are live on the BBC to a nationwide audience in what I expect to be a terrific atmosphere.

“Even though the game is live on television we will see one of the highest attendances of the season at Hillsborough, which goes to show there is nothing better than being inside the stadium for games like this.

“That’s testament to both sets of fans I have no doubt that was one of the reasons why this tie was selected for live coverage by the BBC. When the draw was made, I was as sure as I could be that the game would be televised and it turned out to be that way.”
