Match preview: Owls v Fleetwood

20 January 2023

Wednesday v Fleetwood Town
Saturday 21 January
3:00pm
Sky Bet League One
Hillsborough

THE MATCH

The Owls head into the Fleetwood contest looking to strengthen our grip on the automatic promotion slots.

Darren Moore’s men are unbeaten in 14 league outings, the longest current run of resistance in all four divisions.

In the way on Saturday is a well-drilled Fleetwood side on the road this season. Only three times have the Cod Army tasted defeat and on each occasion by the odd goal.

Fleetwood arrive at Hillsborough placed 17th in League One.

TEAM NEWS

Wednesday: George Byers (foot) is rated as 50/50 by Moore, while Reece James (ankle) is set for a spell on the sidelines spanning weeks.

Barry Bannan (muscle) continues to make steady progress and is back with the squad on the grass but Saturday will come too soon for the skipper.

Fleetwood: The visitors have no fresh injury concerns and their ranks have been boosted this week by the permanent signing of Scott Robertson from Celtic.

On the Wednesday challenge, manager Scott Brown said: “This will be a test of character for the lads; it’s us going away to a club with great history, fantastic support, and a great manager in Darren as well.

“We have to go there and enjoy it, work on what we’ve been doing, be structurally sound behind the ball, and not get done by the crowd early on – we know we can go away from home and cause an upset – we’ve done it in the past.”
