A great welcome back

12 July 2023

George Byers has thanked the Owls fans in attendance at Chesterfield on Tuesday night for the warm reception he received upon his return to action.

The popular midfielder has been out since March but has worked hard behind the scenes and made his long awaited comeback against the Spireites in our 2-1 victory.

Coming on in the final throes of the game with around 10 minutes left on the clock, Byers told swfc.co.uk:

“It’s good to be back out there, it’s been a while.

“There has been a lot of hard work away from the pitch to get back where I am now so it was a big step. I’m just ready to push on now.”

Wednesday fans made sure to give George the warmest of welcomes as he ran on from the sidelines and he continued:

“It was unreal to be fair, and it took me back a bit. It was nice to be back out in front of them.

“I missed the last part of last season and it was a great welcome back and a really nice touch.

“I’ve got a really good relationship with the fans, you can see the hard work I put in on the pitch for the shirt and it was nice to have that reception. It was a really nice feeling.

“I just want to get back and give my best for the upcoming season.

“I got 10 minutes at Chesterfield and I want to kick on now, get my match fitness back, get fitter and fitter as the weeks go by and I should be in a good place come the start of the season.”

He added: “The manager’s ideas are really good, it will obviously take some time to see it out on the pitch, it’s a work in progress but with some of these ideas, we are going to be looking good this season – I feel so anyway.

“So hopefully in the next couple of weeks as we play more games together, and strengthen, we will be ready to go come the start of the season.”
