Amazing support

31 July 2023

The Owls’ league campaign begins on Friday night with a mouth-watering clash against Southampton under the S6 lights and in front of the live Sky Sports cameras.

Time has flown by since that memorable Wembley play-off final day when Wednesday returned to the second tier in dramatic fashion.

Now, following a two-season absence from the Championship, the Owls are back and face a tough start against the Saints who dropped down from the Premier League last season.

New boss Xisco continues to build behind the scenes at Middlewood Road and a busy week is expected ahead of Friday’s fixture.

We rounded off our pre-season schedule with a home clash against Luton on Saturday – Xisco’s first taste of Hillsborough and the manager is looking forward to his first competitive game here this week.

On the support from the weekend and in general since arriving in Sheffield, Xisco said:

“It has been very good for us. It’s not only when you come to the stadium – when you come to the city, it’s amazing.

“One step, you meet one supporter and then another step, there is another one!

“I can only say thank you to them all because they always give big support. They’ve been excellent for us, they understand our job and help us in these situations.

“The most important thing is that they see how we are trying to improve, and every day they follow our performances and our games.

“Against Luton, I think it was our best performance, but we need to continue to improve when we play Southampton.

"We're trying to put out the players that can maybe start for the Championship and I'm very happy with them.

“They worked very hard and it was their best performance we've had in all pre-season but it's not enough as we need to continue improving, continue working and giving better ideas.”
